Workshops - We are very honored to welcome some of our regions most innovative and dynamic farmers and professionals to this year’s workshop roster. Their cumulative knowledge and experience forge a path towards a healthy, more sustainable agriculture.
 
These workshops strive to present practical information, get your imagination reeling, start your hands working and show you a good time!

12:30 Sheep Shearing (Petting Zoo), Watch a master at work. The sheep’s barber shop is open and ready for business.
 
12:30 Blacksmithing (Blacksmith’s booth), Mike Carson. The heat of a forge. The blow of a hammer. The certainty of an anvil. Come watch this artisan shape utility and beauty.
 
12:45 Native Plant Walk, (North Workshop Tent), Tanya Meyer, Yolo Resource Conservation District. Tip toe through the toyon, saunter through the salvia and oogle through the oaks as you are introduced to a diverse native landscape. Discuss the value of these plants and some of the problems with competing invasive species.
 
1:00 Full Belly Farm Tour (Grape Arbor), Paul Muller. Come walk through the farm’s diverse crops to view, hear about and taste the extensive mix of elements that comprise the farm.

1:15 The Straw Bale House (Straw Bale House), Thomas Nelson, owner/ builder. This unique energy efficient home will be open for visits. Design, construction and maintenance will all be discussed.
 
1:30 Organic Strawberries, (North Workshop Tent), James Rickert, Prather Ranch. Twenty-five years ago, “they” said it was impossible to grow strawberries organically. Well, “they” were wrong! Learn about the process of growing organic strawberries from nursery stock selection to harvest with this pioneering grower.
 
1:30 Native Pollinator Walk-They’re as Busy as Bees, (Greenhouse), Katharina Ullman, Xerces Society. They’re out there and they’re working full-time, day and night! Discover who they are, where they live and what they’re pollinating.
1:45 Edible Mushrooms- There’s Fungus Among Us! (Past the Greenhouse), Ken Litchfield, Randall Museum. Welcome to the wonderful and mysterious world of mushrooms. This workshop will inspire anyone to grow mushrooms for the dinner table by participating in a hands-on inoculation of a mushroom garden.
 

2:15 Organic Fruit Trees-Growing Great Tasting Fruit, (South Workshop Tent), Johann Smit, Hidden Star Orchards. If enthusiasm is what you want, Johann will get you excited about fruit trees. Come for an entertaining and information-packed workshop on both the basics and finer points of growing great fruit.

+2:45 Cooking with Kids- a Hands-on Demo, (North Workshop Tent), Michelle Stern, What’s Cooking? Need a little inspiration in the kitchen? Want to get your kids to eat their veggies? Well, help is on the way and you’ll even foster some junior chefs to boot. This workshop is for children and adults alike.
 
3:00 Cow Milking – Very Dairy! (Petting Zoo), Dru Rivers and Valerie George. Come on over to the udder side and see how it’s really done. Meet our cow Arnica. Ask her what she thinks about all of this!
 
3:00 Full Bell Farm Tour (Grape Arbor) Andrew Brait. Another tour, a different farm partner, another perspective.
 
3:15 “Aw Shucks!”- Farming By Land and Sea, South Workshop Tent, Kevin Lunny, Drakes Bay Oysters. A fourth generation Point Reyes beef and oyster producer, Kevin will discuss the importance of good stewardship and sustainable farming practices. P.S. For those lucky enough to attend this workshop, Kevin might even sample out some of his fresh oysters!
 
+ 3:30 Kids Tour of Full Belly Farm (Grape Arbor),  Hallie, Rye and Hannah Rose Muller. The children of the farm will lead this special insiders tour of the place they call home. Kids of all ages are welcome.
3:45 Sheep Dog Demonstration, (Petting Zoo), Jeremy Morrison. They may be cute, but they’re all business. It’s a thrill to see these working dogs in action.
 
3:45 Introduction to Biodynamics with Compost Making (past the Greenhouse), Harald Hoven, Rudolf Steiner College. Roll up your sleeves and get your hands working. Construct a compost pile using Biodynamic preparations and techniques.
 
* 4:00 The Real Dirt – Soil fertility and organic nutrients (Grape Arbor), Carl Rosato, Woodleaf Farm. Get your hands dirty as Carl starts diggin’ around, looking at soil. You’ll discover a whole new subterranean world with each new shovel-full.
 
4:15 What’s Your Beef?- Organic Meat and Livestock, (North Workshop Tent), James and Mary Rickert, Prather Ranch. Natural, grass-fed, organic, certified humane… What do all these terms mean? These pioneering ranchers have lots of answers.
 
4:30 “Spinning Your Wheels”-Trials and Tribulations of Starting a Farm, (South Workshop Tent), Amy Courtney, Free Wheelin’ Farm. The heart of any farm is the passion. Come hear how this fireball of a gal is putting passion and endurance into growing a farm.
 
4:45 Glorious, Grand Grapes (South Workshop Tent), Steve Matthiasson. Premier Viticulture Services. With a little care and attention, this ancient fruit can produce prolifically. Get a hands-on lesson in basic pruning, thinning and cultural practices.

5:15 Farm Insect and Disease Field Walk, (North Workshop Tent), Chris Simas, Agriform. The hand lenses are out and looking for insects, friends and foes. Take a closer look at the plants’ health. Come see what you can find!
 
* 5:15 Small Farm Equipment- The Bone Yard Tour! (Grape Arbor), Tim Mueller, Riverdog Farm and Paul Underhill, Terra Firma Farm. Pick through a lot of old (but working) rusty iron with two local farmers who can yak away ‘til the cows come home.
