The Hoes Down Celebration Continues...

Sunday, October 5th in the
Capay Valley Region, CA

 

A variety of activities throughout the Capay Valley Region give participants a chance to deepen their understanding and connection to both the food system and this agriculturally productive area. Sunday’s celebration of rural living will compliment Saturday’s Hoes Down Festival, by highlighting arts, crafts, wildlife, and the diverse agriculture that this region supports.
Pre-Registration is required and space is limited. Fees and times vary for each activity.

Workshop Registration

Pre-registration is required for all Sunday Activities.
Payment must be received in full to register. Space is limited, so register early! Click here to register.
Unfortunately, we are unable to issue refunds for cancellations. However, we appreciate notification if you are unable to attend. All proceeds from the Sunday Activities will go to benefit sustainable agriculture, local organizations, and worthy projects

Childcare
Unless otherwise specified, the Sunday Activities are not appropriate for children under 10. Please make the necessary childcare arrangements. Children cannot be left unattended at any of the locations. However, we do welcome children with an accompanying adult to relax at Full Belly Farm on Sunday, or join in the farm clean-up activities!

Locations:
All workshops will take place in the Capay Valley Region, within 30 miles of Full Belly Farm in Guinda, California. A map with detailed directions and parking instructions will be sent to you along with your registration confirmation.

Sunday Breakfast
Get a fresh start with a locally grown, organic breakfast! Served at Full Belly Farm, Sunday, Oct. 8th, 8 am – 10 am. Adults: $5, Kids (2-12): $3. This is a first come, first serve affair.

Sunday Activities


Bike Tour
Start and end at Full Belly Farm,Guinda
Time 9:00 – 1:00 Cost $25 (includes lunch) Capacity:20

See the sights by bikes!! Come on this relaxed tour of some of the smaller farms in the northern end of the Capay Valley. The tour will be approximately 10 miles round trip including the exciting towns and farms in Rumsey and Guinda. We will stop by and do some sampling at Cache Creek Lavender farm where Charlie and Linda grow and process 2 acres of French lavender;  Sheep Dreams Ranch where John and Caroline use rotational grazing for their 100 head of Capay Red sheep and a few others farms to be announced. Ex-spandex your horizon on the fun bike tour!

Home Brewing
Old Train Station Ranch, Rumsey
Time 9:30- 12:30  Cost $25 (includes lunch) Capacity: 20

Learn the art and science of home brewing with one of the Capay Valleys finest home brewer’s, Blair Howard. This three hour workshop will include a basic class on ingredients, bottling, flavoring and storage.  Workshop will include sampling some of Blairs’ most beloved recipes as well as a tasty bag lunch made from local ingredients.

Alternative Energy Sources and Uses
Lester Farms in Winters, CA
Time 9:30 –12:30  Cost $20   Capacity:20

Learn about the many exciting new (and really old!) sources of energy that are being used here in our farming community. Solar panels abound on many of the local farms here as well as wind as a vital source of energy. Many farmers are using bio diesel in their tractors, trucks and market vehicles. Several experts in the field of alternative energy will be speaking as well as showing specific examples in use. Learn how you can implement your own energy.

Chicken and the Egg
Riverdog Farm, Guinda

Time: 10 am - noon, Cost: $15, Capacity: 20
We may not know the answer to the age-old question of which came first, the chicken or the egg. But in this workshop you will learn about the needs and productivity of laying hens from experienced small-scale, commercial egg farmers. Nick Charles, brings his experience in rotational grazing with sheep, goats, and poultry. Adam Gaska, is a biodynamic farmer in Mendocino County where he works to integrate animals and crops into the vineyards at Frey Vineyard. From coop design to using chickens in rotational grazing with sheep & goats, this workshop is an opportunity to exchange hen raising techniques. There will also be time to hear answers to questions such as how many hens does it take to produce a given amount of eggs per week? Refreshments will be included. Children Welcome.

Full Belly Farm Kid's Day Camp
Full Belly Farm Guinda, California

The Kid's will enjoy a morning on the farm; with a behind the scenes look at what it really takes to run a farm. The kid's will help with a few farm chores, enjoy games, and activities. Lunch will also be provided.

Full Belly Farm Tour
Full Belly Farm, Guinda

Time: 11 am – 12:30 pm, Cost: $10, Capacity 50
Home of the Hoes Down, Full Belly Farm is a 200-acre certified organic farm. Full Belly has farmed using organic practices since 1984 and is certified by California Certified Organic Farmers. This walking tour lead by one of the owners and residents will be a great opportunity to ask questions, learn, and see how a successful organic farm is run. Full Belly's system includes: growing and marketing over 80 different crops; providing year-round employment for farm labor; using cover crops that fix nitrogen and provide organic matter for the soil; developing innovative marketing strategies; and planting habitat areas for beneficial insects and wildlife. This set of strategies allows the farm to integrate farm production with longer-term environmental goals. The walking tour of the farm will be followed by refreshments and time for discussion and questions with the farmers.

Olive Oil: Small Scale Production
Taber Ranch
Time: 10:00 am - 12:30 pm Cost: $25, Capacity 25
The beautiful Taber Ranch will open the doors to its 2 acre olive grove where orchard tender John Chevelier will  talk about the varieties they grow, management strategies and harvest. The olive oil grown at Taber Ranch has consistently won awards at both the local and regional level. Be prepared for an olive tasting of many Yolo County varieties!!
